Making Flossing a Routine Habit

Tooth brushing and flossing are habits that go hand in hand, but sadly many people only complete half the equation consistently. Flossing is often avoided due to time constraints, discomfort, or lack of knowledge. Despite these popular reasons for avoidance, flossing is an important part of maintaining good dental health. It is essential for getting food debris and bacteria from between teeth and protecting against tooth decay.  You can ensure that your child makes flossing part of their daily routine by teaching them how to floss properly at a young age. Use these flossing tips and teach your child how to have good dental health for life.

Start teaching your child about flossing as soon as two teeth have grown in side by side. In the beginning, floss picks and sticks may make flossing easier, but you can switch to string floss as your child grows. Continue to monitor and assist in their flossing routine and by the age of eight years old, your child should be able to floss without your assistance.

Flossing once a day for approximately two minutes is recommended as an important part of maintaining good dental health. Like brushing, the goal is to work your way around the mouth from back to front on the top, bottom, left, and right. Food can become trapped between teeth and in crevices that a toothbrush simply cannot reach. When performed before brushing, flossing also helps fluoride from toothpaste and mouthwash to flow between the teeth.

4 Tips for Teaching Your Kids How to Floss Properly

  1. Floss comes in a variety of colors and flavors. Allow your child to choose his or her own dental floss, making flossing more fun.
  2. Cut off approximately 18 inches of floss during your child’s morning or evening brushing routine.
  3. Have your child wrap the ends of the floss around their index and middle fingers on each hand.
  4. Show your child how to guide the floss gently between their teeth, moving from back to front, and working all the way around the mouth, top and bottom. Ensure that your child is flossing between the gum line and the sides of every tooth.

Your dentist in Annapolis can show your child how to floss properly and recommend the best dental floss for kids.
