Simple Tooth Extractions – Important Recovery Tips

dca-blog_tooth-extraction-female-brunette

If you have a severely diseased tooth, even your dentist’s best efforts may not be able to save it. When decay, infection, injury, or a failed root canal leaves your tooth unsalvageable, your dentist will usually recommend a dental extraction. The procedure can be performed using a local anesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain. If you have more than one tooth to be extracted, general anesthesia may be a better option. After your tooth is removed, your dentist may close the wound with stitches. You will probably be instructed to bite down on a piece of gauze to control bleeding.

Tell Your Dentist About Preexisting Conditions

Tooth extractions and other dental procedures can sometimes release bacteria into the bloodstream and cause remote infections. You may need to take antibiotics if you have an increased risk of infection. If you have any of the following conditions, tell your dentist about them before treatment.

  • Artificial joints or heart valves or other manmade body parts
  • Mitral valve prolapse or other heart conditions
  • Recent major illnesses or surgeries
  • Lowered immunity from diabetes, autoimmune diseases, HIV, or chemotherapy

Recovering After a Dental Extraction

To hasten recovery after a dental extraction:

  • Reduce swelling by applying ice or a cold pack to the outside of your mouth.
  • Replace gauze pads frequently.
  • Take prescription pain medications as directed.
  • Brush your teeth gently and carefully.
  • Do not rub the extraction site with your tongue.
  • Rinse with warm, salty water several times a day—after the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid physical activity for a day or so to help prevent excessive bleeding.
  • Eat soft foods for a few days and add in solid foods gradually, as tolerated.
  • Do not drink through a straw.
  • Do not smoke.

Any diseased teeth should be extracted as soon as possible so that infection doesn’t spread. Your missing teeth or tooth may be replaced by implants, dentures, or dental bridges, depending on your needs.
